Understanding Autism

Autism is a developmental difference that can affect communication, social interaction, and behavior. Because autism is a spectrum, each individual’s strengths and needs are unique.

Some children may experience challenges with expressive language, social engagement, flexibility, or daily living skills. Others may demonstrate strong interests, advanced abilities in specific areas, or unique ways of learning and interacting with the world.

At BloomWorks ABA, we approach autism through an individualized lens — focusing on understanding each child’s strengths while supporting areas that promote independence, communication, and meaningful participation at home, school, and in the community.

Understanding ABA

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based approach designed to help individuals build meaningful skills and address behaviors that may interfere with learning or daily routines.

ABA focuses on understanding how behavior is influenced by the environment and uses positive reinforcement to encourage growth, communication, and skill development. Programs are highly individualized and may target areas such as:

  • Communication
  • Social interaction
  • Daily living skills
  • Play and adaptive functioning
  • Behavior support

Services are guided by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), who develops and oversees each treatment plan to ensure it is tailored to the child’s strengths, needs, and family goals, and delivered by a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT).

ABA is widely recognized as an effective intervention for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and is designed to promote independence, functional skill development, and long-term progress.

How ABA Services Work

Beginning ABA services can feel overwhelming. Our goal is to provide clear, practical information so families can make informed decisions with confidence.

At BloomWorks ABA, services typically include:

  • A comprehensive assessment conducted by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)
  • Individualized treatment planning in collaboration with parents
  • Direct therapy provided by a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)
  • Ongoing supervision and program adjustments by a BCBA
  • Parent training and support

Treatment is dynamic and evolves as your child grows and progresses.

What to Expect During the Process

Starting ABA services involves several steps designed to ensure care is thoughtful and individualized. At BloomWorks ABA, we're here to guide you through it.

1. Initial Consultation

We begin with a conversation to understand your child’s needs, answer questions, and determine whether our services are a good fit.

2. Insurance Authorization

We work with families to navigate the insurance approval process.

3. Assessment & Treatment Planning

A BCBA conducts an assessment to identify skill areas, behavioral goals, and family priorities. A personalized treatment plan is developed based on this information.

4. Ongoing Services & Supervision

Once services begin, progress is monitored regularly. Treatment plans are reviewed and adjusted to ensure meaningful and sustainable growth.

Our Approach to ABA

ABA services should be structured, ethical, and individualized. At BloomWorks ABA, we prioritize:

  • Evidence-based practices
  • Strong BCBA supervision
  • Clear communication with families
  • Goals that are practical and relevant to daily life

We believe ABA works best when it is collaborative, consistent, and aligned with family values.

When to Consider ABA Services

Families explore ABA services for many different reasons. While every child is unique, ABA may be appropriate if your child is experiencing challenges in areas such as:

  • Communication delays or difficulty expressing needs
  • Limited social engagement or play skills
  • Frequent frustration or behaviors that interfere with learning
  • Difficulty with transitions or changes in routine
  • Challenges with daily living skills such as toileting, feeding, or independence

Some families begin services shortly after receiving an autism diagnosis, while others seek support when specific skill areas become more challenging.

If you are unsure whether ABA is appropriate, an initial consultation can help clarify next steps. Our goal is to provide guidance — not pressure — so families can make informed decisions based on their child’s needs.
